A flightless Australian bird known as 'cassowaries' communicate through the dense foliage of the jungle by means of extra-low frequency sound waves - partly below the range of hearing of humans. People near a cassowarie calling in their lowest register, would feel, rather than hear the sound - much like the low-frequency calls of elephants, which can be heard up to 50 miles (80 km) away. Cassowaries are among the world's most dangerous birds: weighing up to 125 pounds (56 kg), they kick when fighting, and have a 'spike' on their feet which can rip a person open, with sometimes fatal results.
